Dean Slawson is a technology innovation leader with over 20 years’ experience delivering market leading software and online services. Areas of expertise include setting direction through the development of winning strategies and high value, differentiated product concepts and scenarios; practical application of advanced technologies and innovative user experience design; and engineering and program management to deliver mobile and cloud-based applications and services per plan.
From 1995 to 2016, Dean started and led multiple R&D efforts at Microsoft, building and leading high-performance teams, incubating technologies, and shipping products and services touching over a billion users. Dean was a senior leadership team member of efforts ranging from Microsoft’s first large-scale online service integrated with its flagship Office productivity suite to its first learning management solution for schools, to the productization of groundbreaking Microsoft Research technologies and the development of Microsoft Office for iPad. Dean has held roles as a General Manager of incubation and product teams in the U.S. and Asia, as the Director of Program Management of Microsoft Research, and as a Group Program Manager of Microsoft Office.
Before Microsoft, Dean served as a consultant to education, government, military and corporate clients and co-directed a team that pioneered the application of computerized adaptive testing in public schools. He has also worked in the Hollywood television and motion picture industry in a variety of roles. Dean holds a B.S. in Experimental Psychology from Brigham Young University, studied Organizational Behavior in the MBA program of the Marriot School of Management, and did his doctoral studies (Ph.D., ABD) in learning theory, education psychology, and research methods at UCLA.
