Dr. Joon Maeng is an independent patent consultant, inventor, and technologist. He served as Portfolio Architect at Intellectual Ventures (IV), Senior Patent Portfolio Manager at SBC (Currently AT&T) Knowledge Ventures, LP., Chief Scientist/Chairman of IP Committee at VTEL Corp., and Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering Dept. at SUNY Buffalo.
He has over 20 years of experience in developing media communication products and made significant contributions in making standards on communication protocols at ITU, IETF, and ETSI. He supported the entire process of patent commercialization from acquisition to licensing which produced over $1B revenue at IV and developed new licensing programs. As a patent consultant, he has performed a variety of roles in supporting patent monetization including patent mining, valuation, invalidation, claim charting, prosecution, landscape analysis, licensing, litigation, and brokerage in multiple technology areas.
He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Maeng’s areas of expertise include Telecommunication network and devices, Internet protocol, VOIP, IPTV, VOD, wireless devices (LTE, Wifi), broadband (optical, cable TV, xDSL), media (audio and video) processing technology, cameras, web and software technology, IoT, ADAS, and medical imaging devices.
